Yes Segura (He/They), MSP, is an openly transgender man of Maya Indigenous ancestry, first-generation El Salvadoran heritage, born and raised in Richmond, VA and currently residing on Duwamish Land aka Seattle, WA. As an Artist, Yes also carries professional labels such as: Urban/Transportation Planner, Urban Designer, and Cartographer. He is the Founder of Smash the Box, a multidisciplinary community driven Urban Planning & Design Firm rooted in equity and health. Smash the Box also makes and sells art.
Yes holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Geography and Urban Studies from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) and a Master’s of Science in Urban and Regional Planning from Florida State University (FSU) becoming the first in his family to obtain a Master’s degree.
Since founding Smash the Box in 2017, Yes has led transformative mapping projects that center equity in design. In 2020, he served as the Lead Cartographer in redesigning Washington State Legislative District #14 with the Redistricting Justice for Washington Coalition. This map was used in a Civil Rights Act court case, and would later be approved by the U.S. District Court to accurately represent a majority Latino/x and Native voting district. In 2023, he worked as the Technical and Design Lead for the City of Seattle’s Neighborhood Census Infographic Snapshots, a collaboration with several City of Seattle Departments. The infographics include maps of the neighborhoods and demographic data used by local community organizations as supporting evidence in grant applications + other city departments in informing their outreach.
